Examines and critically analyzes the policies, regulations, and organizational change issues that aim to improve the lives of children, youth, and families from tribal and United States backgrounds. The contexts, forces, and ideologies that produce the often-changing goals and methods of agencies serving children and their families at a tribal, state, and national levels will be examined. Emphasis will be placed on current opportunities and dilemmas facing Indian child welfare programs and public and private child welfare agencies. Using social and behavioral science research and information related to diversity and social justice, critical frameworks for assessing and analyzing child welfare policies, service systems, and organizational structures will be developed. Designed to assist the student in understanding and using the prevailing psychiatric taxonomic system, the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV-TR). Prepares students to function in clinical settings where familiarity with the DSM-IV-TR criteria and the multi-axial diagnostic framework is fundamental knowledge. Additionally, students will examine the benefits and risks of this psychiatric taxonomy in relationship to diversity, culture, prevention, treatment, and recovery from a mental illness.
